Step 1 - Create a Restore Point First!
Always do this first. If anything goes wrong after tweaking, you can restore your PC to its current working state in minutes.
1
Create System Restore Point
Press Windows Key, type "create" and press Enter. Click "Create" at the bottom, name it anything (e.g. "Before Gaming Tweaks") and wait for it to finish. Now you are safe to proceed with all tweaks below.
Step 2 - Essential Windows Settings
1
Enable Game Mode
Press Windows Key, type "Game Mode" and press Enter. Turn it ON. This tells Windows to run fewer background tasks while you are gaming — giving your game more CPU and GPU priority.
2
Enable Windowed Game Optimizations + HAGS
In the same screen, click Graphics, then Change Default Graphics Settings. Enable Optimizations for Windowed Games — this gives DX10/DX11 games like Fortnite the same input delay as exclusive fullscreen. Also enable Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) if you see it — it offloads CPU tasks to the GPU, helping CPU-intensive games.
HAGS may cause stutters in some GPU-heavy games. Try it on, and turn it off if you notice any instability.
3
Disable Core Isolation (Memory Integrity)
Press Windows Key, type "core" and press Enter. Toggle Memory Integrity OFF. This virtualization-based security feature costs around 5% average gaming performance. Safe to disable as long as you have Windows Defender active and avoid downloading suspicious files.
4
Disable Notifications and Do Not Disturb
Go to Settings - System - Notifications. Disable notifications and enable Do Not Disturb. The notification management processes running in the background consume resources — disabling them frees up CPU cycles for your game.
5
Disable Dynamic Lighting and Share Across Devices
Go to Settings - Personalization - Dynamic Lighting and turn both options OFF. Dynamic lighting is a background RGB management process that can conflict with other software. Then go to Apps - Advanced App Settings - Share Across Devices and disable it. This was linked to a serious CPU usage bug and still reduces unnecessary background activity.
6
Disable Startup Apps
Go to Settings - Apps - Startup Apps. Disable anything you do not need starting with Windows. Every startup app consumes RAM and CPU at boot — removing them speeds up your system and frees memory for gaming.
7
Disable Transparency and Animation Effects
Go to Settings - Accessibility - Visual Effects. Disable both Transparency Effects and Animation Effects. These are invisible during gameplay but still consume GPU resources in the background.
8
Disable All Privacy Settings
Go to Settings - Privacy and Security. Click through every subcategory from General to Activity History and disable everything. These background telemetry and tracking processes consume system resources constantly. Better privacy AND better performance.
9
Windows Update - Disable Intrusive Settings
Go to Settings - Windows Update - Advanced Options. Disable the top 4 settings. Then go to Delivery Optimization and uncheck Allow downloads from other PCs. This stops Windows from using your internet to send updates to strangers — better privacy and no background bandwidth usage.
10
Advanced System Performance Settings
Press Windows Key, type "advanced" and press Enter. Under Performance, click Settings. Select Adjust for Best Performance — OR manually enable just these 3 near the bottom for a balance of looks and performance: "Smooth edges of screen fonts", "Show thumbnails instead of icons" and "Show window contents while dragging".
Step 3 - Debloat with Chris Titus Tech Tool
This tool removes unnecessary Windows bloat, background services and AI garbage. Run it after every major Windows update as updates often reinstall bloatware you previously removed!
1
Open PowerShell as Administrator
Press Windows Key, type PowerShell, right-click and select Run as Administrator.
2
Run the Command
Type or paste this command and press Enter:
irm christitus.com/win | iex
A GUI window will appear after a few seconds. No installation required!
3
Click Tweaks Tab and Apply
Click the Tweaks tab. Hover over each tweak to read its description before applying. In the Advanced Tweaks - Caution section you can check most things — BUT do NOT enable Adobe Network Block if you use any Adobe products like Adobe Express. Once ready click Run Tweaks and wait a few minutes.
Skip "Set Display to Performance" in the tool — we will manually configure display settings separately for best results.
Do NOT blindly check everything. Read each tweak description first. The Caution section means exactly that — proceed with understanding.
Step 4 - Ultimate Performance Power Plan
1
Unlock Ultimate Performance Plan (Mid to High-End PCs)
Press Windows Key, type "power" and press Enter. Open Command Prompt separately and paste this command:
powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61
Reopen Power Options — the Ultimate Performance plan will now appear under Additional Plans. Select it. This power plan outperforms every other plan in latency and frame rate on most systems.
Run benchmarks with different power plans to see which works best for YOUR specific PC. Results can vary by hardware.
Step 5 - Nvidia Control Panel Optimization
Open Nvidia Control Panel - right-click desktop or open from system tray. Go to Manage 3D Settings. Apply these settings globally or per-game in Program Settings tab.
Image SharpeningOFF
Anisotropic FilteringApplication-Controlled
Antialiasing - FXAAOFF

Max Frame RateOFF (or your monitor refresh rate)

Step 6 - AMD Software Optimization
Open AMD Software - press Settings cog top right, then Preferences. Disable EVERYTHING. Also disable all Hotkeys to prevent accidental toggles during gameplay. Then click Gaming - Graphics for global settings.
Texture Filtering QualityPerformance (not Standard)
Surface Format OptimizationENABLED - Better FPS + Lower VRAM
Tessellation ModeOverride Application Settings
Maximum Tessellation LevelOFF
All Preferences and HotkeysDISABLED

These AMD tweaks reduced both RAM usage by 1 GB and VRAM usage by 1 GB in testing — a massive benefit for gaming on mid and low-end systems!

Step 7 - Registry Tweaks (23.7% Better 1% Lows!)
Open Registry Editor - press Windows Key, type "regedit" and press Enter. Navigate to each path below by copying it into the address bar at the top of the editor.

Tweak 1 - GPU Priority

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl
GPU PriorityDecimal: 8
PriorityDecimal: 6
Scheduling CategoryHigh
SFIO PriorityHigh

Tweak 2 - Win32 Priority Separation (+23.7% Better 1% Lows!)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\PriorityControl
Win32PrioritySeparationDecimal: 38

This fully prioritizes the foreground application (your game) over background tasks. Try different values (26, 38, 42) and restart after each to see what works best for your system. Decimal 38 is the most recommended starting point.

Tweak 3 - Disable Network Throttling

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
NetworkThrottlingIndexHexadecimal: FFFFFFFF

If NetworkThrottlingIndex does not exist - right-click empty space, New - DWORD (32-bit) Value, name it NetworkThrottlingIndex, double-click and set value to FFFFFFFF. Reduces network latency in online games!

Tweak 4 - System Responsiveness

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Multimedia\SystemProfile
SystemResponsivenessDecimal: 0

Default value is 20 (Windows reserves 20% CPU for background tasks). Setting to 0 gives your game 100% of CPU resources. Significant FPS improvement in CPU-bottlenecked scenarios!

Step 8 - Enable XMP / DOCP in BIOS
1
Check Your RAM Speed First
Search your RAM model online or check its label to confirm it supports XMP (Intel) or DOCP (AMD). Most DDR4 and DDR5 sticks above 2400 MHz support it.
2
Enter BIOS
Restart your PC and spam Delete or F2 as it boots. You will enter the BIOS setup screen. Look for XMP or DOCP in the main screen or under Advanced - Memory settings.
3
Enable XMP / DOCP
Set XMP or DOCP to Enabled or Profile 1. Save and exit. Your RAM will now run at its advertised speed instead of its default slow speed — a free and immediate performance boost for gaming!
XMP/DOCP is the single most overlooked free performance upgrade. Most PCs are running RAM at half speed without it!
